The nearby history museum’s craft stations and park lawns entertain children, but busy roads, no plaza toilets, and few hands-on exhibits demand short, well-supervised stops.
Why 2-3 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: Allows time to explore the gate, museum, playground and LED garden at a relaxed pace for young children.
Explore Gate Architecture:
Walk around the Ongseong outer wall and study the stone carvings on the two-story gate.
Tip: Point out the animal carvings (Japsang) to the kids—see who spots the funniest one first.
Visit Dongdaemun History Museum:
Inside DDP, see Joseon-era relics and watch a short video on Seoul’s city wall.
Tip: Pick up the free kids’ activity paper at the entrance for games and a small prize.
Play at DDP Park Playground:
Let kids run on the lawn and use slides in the open space next to the LED rose garden.
Tip: Bring a picnic mat and snacks—benches can fill up quickly on weekends.
Stroll LED Rose Garden at Night:
Walk the lighted pathways of metal roses after dusk for a magical atmosphere.
Tip: Visit around 7pm—lights come on early but crowds are smaller before 8pm.

Distant observation of an Ancient City Gate This massive city gate, a historical structure that has survived to the present day, exhibits significant discoloration likely due to pollution. Currently inaccessible to the public, it can only be viewed from outside or in a distance, it offers visitors a perspective on the integration of historical and modern architectural styles. Future access is hop...

Worth a brief visit even it's a main intersection and so quite a lot of traffic around. Not sure if you can go inside as it was locked when I was there. Impressive structure nonetheless.

Impressive and massive city gate that luckily has survived the test of time. However, it is in dire need of some care and attention. It is very dark in colour due to pollution and the wood seems old. Look left of its location for some remains of the ancient city wall and for a hike uphill alongside the city wall.

Beautiful and massive east gate of Seoul. Delightful to see up close at night. Recommend a walk around it. Well restored.

Impressive view from the top of the wall. Where ancient and modern architecture blended together. A must see if you enjoy historical.
