How Kids-Friendly is Gwanghwamun Square?

Kids can splash in the 2 cm Waterway, watch the Royal Guard change, slide at the summer pool and explore free exhibits, but shade is limited and parents must supervise near water jets and crowds.

Considerations for visiting Gwanghwamun Square (with kids)

Positives:

  • Free Entry: All outdoor attractions like fountains and statues have no admission fee.
  • Stroller-Friendly: Wide, flat pathways make it easy to move with a stroller.

Challenges:

  • Crowds During Ceremonies: 10 AM and 2 PM guard changes draw large groups; keep kids close.
  • Limited Shade: Few covered areas; bring hats, sunscreen, and water on hot days.

Recommended visit duration: 2-3 hours

Why 2-3 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: Allows time for the guard ceremony, history waterway splash, fountain show, and a break at the outdoor library.

After visiting the palace, we walked through the main gate to this lively road full of locals and tourists. Janice way to explore Seoul street life. Best time to do this walk is in the evening, walk from the palace gate through this area to the stream.

This walking area is insanely awesome. Especially when Netflix is putting out the squid game promotion. There were people everywhere, the dolls were standing around, even the guards were there. There are sitting areas and there's all these famous buildings around the plaza. It's a must for any visitor to Seoul. It takes you straight to the Royal Palace and the Royal museum. Easily get here using t...

A great outdoors space - public square - with the backdrop of the Gwanghwamun Gate/Gyeongbokgung Palace &mountains in the background (looking north). There was an event organized the Seoul Outdoor Library - where hundreds of families had lounged/camped out on the square reading books. Very impressed with this initiative to encourage youngsters to read books!! There are big statues of historical...

It is great place to visit especially during cherry blossom week. Chilly weather make a difference for the week but it did not stop the crowd. Highly recommend to get your Hanbook in for photo shooting
