What makes it 61% Kids-Friendly: Children can spot cartoon dogs and hear staff stories, but fragile canvases, no hands-on exhibits, and narrow aisles mean parents must supervise closely and keep the visit brief.
Why 1-2 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: Kids can explore the gallery’s art and interactive spots without getting restless.
Art Character Hunt:
Let kids find and name each Lonely Dog and cat in the gallery.
Tip: Give each child a simple checklist to mark off characters as they go.
Storytime with Staff:
Ask a team member to share the short tale behind Alveridgea and Lonely Dog.
Tip: Visit between 11am–2pm when staff are less busy and can chat.
Gallery Selfie Spots:
Pose beside life-size prints and sculptures of Ivan Clarke’s characters.
Tip: Bring a small prop like a toy dog to make photos more fun.
Souvenir Shopping:
Pick up postcards or small prints of the Lonely Dog series.
Tip: Budget about NZD 5 per postcard and ask for bundle discounts.

Amazing and versatile artist. This is the first time I have heard of him and I think he's a rare talent.

Popped in today. Enjoyed the gallery and what was on display, but I did notice that the framing on some pieces was poorly made.

We love the Ivan Clarke gallery with the Lonely dog and NZ scenic paintings. Staff are lovely and informative. A treat to see artwork from Raquel Clarke too which is very different from her Father's but something I could find a place for in my home.

Enjoyed experiencing Ivan Clarkes works today and getting a rundown on all his major art pieces. Florence was an excellent advocate for his art and explained in brilliant detail the meaning behind the pieces! Definitely check it out if you’re in town!
Francis Caetano
Unbelievably incredible! The irony, the artwork, a great display worth visiting No charge! I now see why it’s in the top 10 to do’s in Queenstown.
The gallery is indoors, making it perfect on rainy or cold days. In summer, visit early to escape midday crowds.
