What makes it 81% Kids-Friendly: School-age children can spend hours in the huge splash playground, learn to surf, and join library maker sessions; lifeguards patrol but rough surf and few shade shelters require close supervision.
Why 1-2 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: Kids can enjoy the playground, pier walk and sand play without tiring.
Play at the Beachside Playground & Splash Park:
Let kids climb the whale sculpture, use water cannons and splash in the paddling pools.
Tip: Bring swimwear and towels; the splash area drains quickly, so dress kids before arrival.
Walk the New Brighton Pier:
Stroll the 300 m pier for ocean views and watch local surfers and fishermen.
Tip: Go at low tide for easier beach access or during golden hour for soft light.
Build Sandcastles and Explore Rock Pools:
Use the firm sand near the pier to build structures and search for small marine life in rock pools.
Tip: Bring a small bucket and spade; sturdy boots help when stepping on sharp shells.
Rent Boogie Boards or Soft-Top Surfboards:
Hire boards and wetsuits for a family surf session on gentle waves.
Tip: Book rentals online in advance; choose soft-top boards for safer learning.

Although it's not quite the short travel from my house, I sometimes visit there whenever I miss the ocean. There are lots of on street parking spaces alongside the beach as well.

a nice and long beach 👍 freedom camping is allowed on the beach side of the road and there is also a flush toilet (but on the end of the road so you have to walk a bit and when we stayed there in February 2025 you couldn't lock it... but that's the only reason why we give 4 stars and not 5) 🙂

Long walks, pierre, cafes. Really nice beach with freedom camp as well

Beautiful! Great for dogs and long walks. Need to climb sand dune paths to reach the beach. Also, remember where you accessed the beach, because a lot of entrances look the same.

Over the dunes. Beautiful sandy beach. Great sunrises. A few tables and chairs in the dunes to sit and take in the views.
In summer, wear sun hats and apply SPF30+ often. In winter, bring windbreakers and check water temperature before swimming.
