What makes it 70% Kids-Friendly: Primary-age children like tunnels, gun emplacements and small playground near Taylor’s Mistake, but exposed cliffs mean constant supervision and loop length challenges tired legs.
Why 3–4 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: This allows time for a loop walk, tunnel exploration, beach play, and breaks without rushing young children.
Taylor’s Mistake to Boulder Bay Loop Walk:
Follow the 7 km coastal track past WWII gun emplacements and historic baches.
Tip: Start at Taylor’s Mistake car park so most uphill walking is on the way out, keeping the return downhill for tired kids.
Tunnel Track Exploration:
Walk 800 m return from Godley Head car park to the old military tunnel and gun position.
Tip: Carry small flashlights so children can safely explore the tunnel interior.
WWII Battery Play at Boulder Bay:
Let kids climb around the concrete gun emplacements and peek into lookout shelters.
Tip: Supervise closely and wear sturdy shoes—surfaces can be uneven inside the structures.
Taylor’s Mistake Beach Fun:
Enjoy sandcastle building, shallow water paddling, and a nearby playground.
Tip: Bring boogie boards or sand toys and pack a picnic at the beach-side tables next to the public toilets.

A fabulous walk. Really quite quiet. Good facilities at the car park and lots of route options. The views were stunning. So close to Christchurch but you do need a car to get to it.

Beautiful scenery and beach. Great for walking, even with dogs and kids. The main walk usually gets quite busy as it is very popular with locals and tourists. But there are quite other options too as well as mountain bike tracks. Or you could just chill on the beach.
Summer brings calm waters ideal for paddling and boogie boarding. In winter, tracks can be muddy—pack rain jackets and waterproof footwear.
