What makes it 63% Kids-Friendly: Wide ramps let children cross safely, they can hunt carvings and watch eels, but there are no toilets or play equipment on the bridge so attention may fade after a short stop.
Why 30 minutes visit duration is ideal for with kids: Short memorial visit fits young children’s attention spans when combined with nearby activities
Feed the longfin eels:
Toss small pieces of bread or fish pellets into the Avon River from the terrace steps.
Tip: Supervise children at the railing and bring small portions to avoid mess.
History treasure hunt:
Challenge kids to find the Latin inscription, carved wreaths, and cenotaph names on the arch.
Tip: Create a simple checklist so children can mark off each discovery.
Guided Avon River punt:
Take a 30-minute punting tour under the bridge and past willows in Botanic Gardens.
Tip: Book the family combo ticket in advance to guarantee space at busy times.
Family kayak hire:
Rent a double kayak for an hour and explore the Avon River at your own pace.
Tip: Ensure life jackets fit children; staff provide sizes for ages 3–12.
Stroller-friendly memorial walk:
Use the wide, flat path across the bridge with smooth ramps and safe railings.
Tip: Bring a sturdy pram and allow extra time for photo stops and reflection.

The weather added to the nostalgia of the moment - in remembrance of those who gave everything serving during the first world war. Beautiful parks on either side, with autumnal colours adding to the drama. Walking distance from CHC business and shopping district with several restaurants and coffee shops in close proximity.

Bridge across river Avon and an imposing stone arch in the memory of those who perished in the world war. An upmarket place with many restaurants around and the Riverside market close by. A hang around spot in Christchurch

The arch commemorating the First World War is very spectacular when seen in person! There are many bars, restaurants and shops, it is a good place to stay for 2-3 hours! Very conveniently located in the heart of Christchurch. But the shops closed quite early, around six o'clock many shops were already closed.
In summer, go early to avoid heat and combine with shaded Botanic Gardens. In April join the short Anzac Day dawn service ceremony. In winter dress kids warmly and check river conditions.
