Kids up to junior high enter free on Saturdays and like the samurai armor and koi pond, yet fragile displays, no hands-on workshops until 2026, and museum hush can shorten their attention span.
Why 2-3 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: Long enough to see rotating exhibits and stroll the garden without rushing young children.
See National Treasures:
View original Tale of Genji scrolls and samurai armor.
Tip: Head to the main hall first to catch the key treasures before they rotate.
Stroll Tokugawa Garden:
Walk paths past waterfalls, bridges and a koi pond.
Tip: Let kids feed the carp and explore gentle slopes on stroller-friendly paths.
Join a Volunteer Docent Tour:
Learn stories behind armor, masks and tea tables from English-friendly guides.
Tip: Ask at the ticket desk for the next children’s-friendly tour slot.
Use the Free Audio Guide:
Listen to simple English explanations of highlights.
Tip: Pick up the audio guide at the entrance and give headsets to older kids.

A very fascinating and interesting museum. We loved reading about the history and seeing so much on display for viewing, very impressive. The garden was just as enjoyable with great views to behold. We're so glad we decided to visit. Highly recommend.

Started off great with a nice variety, but then quickly turned into nothing but Japanese swords and long lines to see it all. Beautiful museum and gardens overall.

They don’t provide audio tour, brief English translation is provided with every exhibit. Quite a lot of replica is on display but isn’t that’s most of the other Museums do nowadays? Touring last about 1.5 hours

Well organized museum and garden. Get the combo ticket to save a little. Also you get a discount if you bought the city tourist bus day pass. Day bus pass is super convenient. 500 yen for all day and goes to all the major attractions. Museum is kind of far from the city center. And Closed on Wednesdays. Found out the hard way. Google didn’t show it as closed.

Since I liked Tokugawa Shogunate history, I was really happy to visit this museum. It has English explanation on each exhibit which was great for us foreigners. I bought the entry ticket in a bundle with the Tokugawa Garden ticket, and if I remember correctly it's about 1,500 yen. Be careful not to take a video because they prohibit you to, but taking picture is OK as long as you do not use flash ...
