Senbon Torii (Thousand Torii Gates) (with baby)

Don't be fooled by the photos, this place is huge. You will get lost between the gates for hours. The eerie atmosphere is even better in the evening. There are literally thousands of Torii gates, huge, smaller and tiny. I recommend you stock on water an hike to the top of the hill. Amazing experience. Tickets are not needed but if your wanting to purchase anything from the temples or drinks/snacks on the mountain you will need cash. The whole place is incredible, a must see. There were a lot of people around the lower temples and the bottom area but as you explore the pathways up to the top of the mountain there are far fewer people and it is much more peaceful and scenic. This one starts pretty much as soon as you step off the train, which is very convenient — no long trek just to get to the starting point. The build-up is great too, with shrines, stalls, and even some traditional performances going on when we arrived. Sets the vibe right. I have never seen this place before and I have to say it is very cool to see. I went there during the afternoon toward evening and most of the crowds had dispersed. The further we went the less people were around. The top is a ways away but very cool with tons of good views. There some wild boars up there and monkeys. I recommend going all the way up.

If you’re looking for a beautiful scenery, spiritual serenity, and a workout to go with it this location is the spot for you. I would recommend either coming early in the morning or closer to dusk when the crowds die down as this is and extremely popular spot.
