Babies enter free and a diaper bed exists, but many steps block strollers, no nursing room is on site and parents must carry infants through narrow tatami rooms, so comfort drops on visits over 1 hour.
Why 1-2 hours visit duration is ideal for with baby: This temple visit covers the main hall and garden before a baby tires.
View the Twin Dragons ceiling:
Stand beneath the Hattō Hall ceiling to see the twin-dragon painting.
Tip: Hold your baby in a carrier. Arrive early to avoid crowds.
Stroll Chaoshō Zen garden:
Walk the simple dry landscape garden behind the main hall.
Tip: Use a soft-sole baby carrier and pause at the flat meditation stone.
Watch koi fish by the pond:
Let your baby watch koi swim in the pond near the entrance.
Tip: Stand at the low railing for a clear view and quick photo.
Sample green tea at the shop:
Try a complimentary small cup of matcha in the gift shop.
Tip: Sip while sitting on the bench to calm your baby before strolling on.
Snack break on Hanamikoji Street:
Step outside the gate for wagashi or soft serve at a nearby café.
Tip: Ask for high chairs and stroller storage before you order.

In autumn, red maples frame the Zen garden for a baby-friendly stroll; in spring, look for cherry blossoms near the southern gate. Avoid rainy days as paths get slippery.

Correct as of July '25 Midday, midweek. Beautiful and interesting place. Fairly quiet, lovely to explore. Unfortunately, there are very few signs in English and no guide, making difficult to understand and less enjoyable or interesting than it could be

Most beautiful zen garden, visited just after heavy rain and it was incredibly tranquil and green. Would come back in a heartbeat. The ceiling mural is very impressive too and you can rent kimonos and walk around the temple from a nearby shop.

Kenninji Temple feels like a peaceful Zen escape—far less crowded than Kyoto’s big-name temples. The modern yet majestic ceiling painting of twin dragons is breathtaking, and the lush courtyard is a serene highlight.

This is the best and oldest Zen temple in Kyoto. Not as busy as other places and the gardens are fantastic as are all the buildings. A great place to relax. Well worth a visit. 800 jpy entry pp.

Wonderful temple worth the entrance fee. The impressive dragon ceiling is a massive artwork hanging over one of the halls. Be sure to visit also the smaller exhibitions and the traditional Japanese gardens. Wonderful place.
