Children can hop stepping stones, watch ducks and picnic, but guardians must supervise constantly because rocks get slippery, banks lack railings, and no playground or staff support exists.
Why 2-3 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: Allows time for stone play, picnic, and a leisurely walk.
Stepping-Stone Play:
Kids hop across flat stones near Shijō Bridge.
Tip: Hold hands and watch for wet, slippery stones.
Riverside Picnic:
Spread a mat on the grassy bank and enjoy bento by the water.
Tip: Buy fresh onigiri or sushi rolls nearby and bring napkins.
Kawa-doko Terrace Dining:
Dine on raised wooden decks over the river at Pontocho in summer.
Tip: Reserve a kids’ bento at Pontocho Idumoya in advance (¥880).
Stroller-Friendly Walk:
Wide paved paths north of Demachiyanagi suit strollers and small legs.
Tip: Start at Demachiyanagi Station and follow signs along the river.

It was a beautiful experience just getting to walk along this river and see everybody living their own lives, chatting, biking, skipping rocks, and more. The ripples of the water shimmered in the sunlight and I was so entranced that I had to come back the next day to watch the sunset again. I wish I had a bike — I think it would have been delightful to ride along the river.

Beautiful road along the river to walk, relax or go on a run. Always a favorite.

It’s the perfect balance of old and new. Serenity and city. Past and present. 🧘♂️🌆 💧 The r...
