Kids can wave at river rafts, count eight tunnels and ride for half price, yet parents must manage 25 minutes with no toilets, no play zone and 60 stairs at Arashiyama platform.
Why 2-3 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: Includes the 25-minute ride each way plus time to explore the bamboo grove and station facilities without rushing younger children.
Ride the open-air Car No.5:
Feel the breeze and enjoy unobstructed valley views from the grated floor car.
Tip: Arrive 30 minutes before departure to secure seats together in Car No.5.
Count tunnels and wave at boats:
There are eight tunnels and frequent riverboats on the Hozu River.
Tip: Give kids a checklist of tunnels to spot and boats to wave at for added fun.
Walk the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove:
Stroll under towering bamboo after your train ride.
Tip: Use a baby carrier and bring water; paths are uneven and narrow.
Use Saga Station baby care room:
Private nursing room and diaper-changing seats inside the 19th Century Hall.
Tip: Visit before boarding; facilities are free and conveniently located.

Fantastic views from the railway along the Hozu River gorge. We booked online, a month in advance to secure the window seats of the "Rich" (open air) car. Journey was great fun.

Short ride in a beautiful valley. I wouldn't go there only for it, but if you stay in Arashiyama and have an hour - it can be nice. It is easy to book tickets beforehand. I did a return trip twice. A better view is from the right side on the way from Arashiyama and on your left on the way to Arashiyama.

It's a fantastic experience, just don't always expect cherry blossoms. You have to choose the right time and be lucky. If you want to go for the experience you will still see breathtaking views. If you go during cold season bundle up.

Need to pre book tickets online. Select even numbered seats only, good weather, go for car 5. Thank me later. Standing tickets avail half priced, free to sit if empty seats, so good for low season. Book immediate next train back, even seats again. Nothing much to do at end stop unless you're taking the boat ride.
