What makes it 78% Kids-Friendly: Kids can climb the wooden obstacle course, splash in shallow streams, and sample festival snacks, yet steep summit trails and limited safety rails restrict under-12 exploration.
Why 2-3 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: Allows time for kids to play, explore short trails, picnic, and enjoy the playground without rushing.
Playground and Obstacle Course:
Let kids climb low ropes and wooden structures near the entrance.
Tip: Watch children closely as surfaces are unpadded and have them wear closed-toe shoes.
Stream-Edge Exploration:
Walk along shallow riverbanks and let kids splash water and search for small creatures.
Tip: Pack extra clothes and towels for wet play.
Short Loop Trails:
Follow 10–20 minute flat loops around ponds that suit young walkers.
Tip: Bring a light backpack for snacks and water.
Picnic on the Grass:
Spread mats in grassy areas under shade trees for a family lunch.
Tip: Carry a picnic blanket and refillable water bottles from home.
Family BBQ (Apr–Oct):
Reserve the designated BBQ area and grill rentals for a group cookout.
Tip: Book the BBQ spot in advance and bring your own utensils and charcoal.

While most reviews seem to focus on the plum grove, I'd like to share that the autumn foliage is actually quite beautiful as well! 🍁⠜ While most people probably visit between January and March, Yugawara's warm climate means the autumn foliage peaks in early December, allowing you to enjoy it until late into the day. At this time of year, the air is dry and the skies are clear, making the autumn...

Makuyama Park spends 11 months out of the year essentially dormant and uninteresting, but in February it puts on its full dress in the form of a wide variety of plum blossoms. Now is the time to visit. For those in the area on the last week of February, I highly recommend visiting. For details ask at the visitor center next to Yugawara Station.

Lovely spot. We caught it as plum trees were beginning to bloom. Lovely scents too. We hiked up the mountain a ways for a nice bit of exercise. We spent about 3 hours there. Easy 15 minutes bus ride up from Yugawara station.
Visit early February to mid March for plum blossoms (¥200 entry). April to October offers BBQ rentals. Summer days can get hot—bring hats and sunscreen.
