Kids up to 12 can role-play on the pirate ship, pedal swan boats and explore flat parks; life-jackets and vigilance near deep water are vital, yet toilets, picnic lawns and ropeways help comfort.
Why 2-3 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: Allows a boat cruise, park walk and ropeway ride at a relaxed pace for kids.
Pirate-Ship Cruise:
Board the themed boat at Moto-Hakone for a 40-minute round-trip across Lake Ashi.
Tip: Choose front-deck seats for ridge views of Mt. Fuji and let kids spot the torii gate at Hakone Shrine.
Swan-Boat Rental:
Pedal swan boats from Hakone-machi pier for a fun, hands-on ride close to the shore.
Tip: Rent for 30 minutes and steer near the reeds where kids can feed fish with bread.
Onshi-Hakone Park Stroll:
Walk stroller-friendly paths on the former imperial villa grounds with lake and mountain views.
Tip: Stop at the Lakeside Panorama Pavilion benches; pack a small picnic to enjoy on lawns.
Komagatake Ropeway:
Ride the gondola from Hakone-en to the summit for panoramic lake and Mt. Fuji sights.
Tip: Ride early to avoid queues and let kids collect the ropeway boarding tickets as souvenirs.

The boat ride was over all too quick. It's clear and calm waters make the boats motor totally out of place. I'd gladly hoist up a pirate sail...

Lake Ashi in Hakone is a scenic crater lake surrounded by mountains, often seen with Mount Fuji in the background. The area offers boat cruises, lakeside trails, and hot springs. A peaceful destination ideal for day trips or weekend escapes from Tokyo.

We came to Lake Ashi and took the cruise on what looked like a pirate ship. This ship has a lift that made it easy to reach the open deck. It was spring and the wind made it feel very cold on the ship. The lake is pleasant and we could see the Tori of Peace from the deck.

Lovely experience. Weather was great and sunny. Managed to do the Lake Ashi pirate shop tpu, paddling in a swan boat and paddled past the famous toji gate
