What makes it 66% Kids-Friendly: Children like spotting leaping salmon and feeding swans, and paths are flat, yet railings are low to water and there are no toilets or play areas, so close supervision is vital.
Why 2-3 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: Allows time to watch salmon, enjoy swan feeding, take a kayak tour, and relax with a picnic without tiring younger children.
Watch salmon leaps and swan feeding:
Observe salmon jumping upstream at the weir and feed swans along the riverbank.
Tip: Visit May to September in early morning or late afternoon for the most fish activity. Bring bird-friendly snacks.
Family kayak rental on River Corrib:
Rent a kayak for 2 adults and up to 2 kids to paddle along calm river sections.
Tip: Book online in advance. Ensure lifejackets fit all ages and pack a waterproof bag for phones.
Gentle white-water rafting:
Take a guided 1.5–2 hour rafting trip on mild rapids with certified instructors.
Tip: Check the minimum age (usually 6+). Wear quick-dry clothes and secure water shoes.
Corrib River & Lake cruise:

Riverside picnic and play:

Tip: Bring a blanket, snacks, and a change of clothes so kids can splash safely in shallow areas.

There is also a new bridge now, for pedestrians only, parallel to the Salmon Weir bridge in Galway right in front if the Galway Cathedral. The location is great but seems to be a functional bridge alone, with no decorations. Lovely place to sit down and enjoy the view of the Cathedral.. perfect spot for a picture too !

It was a light drizzle/rain which literally put a damper on our walk around. But nevertheless, nice serene scenery all around and the way the waterways are managed. And the houses/homes just by the waterway with the balcony opening up to the water 😍

May through September offers salmon migration viewing. Summer brings warmer weather. Always carry rain gear; the bridge can be windy.
