Kids may like watching boats and street performers, yet no railings by the water, fast roads beside paths, and a lack of toilets or playgrounds mean parents must supervise constantly and keep visits short.
Why 2-3 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: Allows time for a riverside walk, boat ride and snack stops without rushing young children.
Cross Ha’penny Bridge:
Walk across the iconic pedestrian bridge linking north and south quays.
Tip: Arrive by 9 AM to beat the crowds and capture clear family photos.
Family river cruise:
Take a boat tour to view Dublin’s landmarks from the water.
Tip: Book family tickets online in advance and bring a windbreaker for the open deck.
Snack break on Temple Bar quays:
Enjoy kid-friendly treats at riverside cafes on the south bank.
Tip: Try fresh juice stalls and rest on nearby benches overlooking the water.
In summer, enjoy extended daylight for later cruises. In spring, spot swans near the Custom House. In autumn, watch colorful leaves along the banks. In winter, wear a waterproof layer and check the forecast for wind.

The River Liffey adds so much beauty to Dublin! Loved walking along it and crossing the bridges — peaceful views right in the heart of the city.

I had a night stroll down River Liffey and found it relaxing and stunning, there’s a great amount of historical buildings lined across the River that at night are light up beautifully.

It's a nice walk down the Liffey and see the views and areas of Dublin. You can see a lot of landmarks from the walkways off the Liffey, including the Guiness disturbing factory. We walked around the Liffey multiple times on our trip. The bridges are also beautiful. The water is pretty dirty, but we did hear that some locals fish... not something I would do, but when in Dublin!

It is not supposed to be possible to walk the full length of the river Liffey - to do that you would be "off road" through bog and wetlands for a lot of the journey - the challenge is not for the faint hearted. However, proud to report that my son Marc finished his walk from the Liffey Head Bog to Poolbeg Lighthouse today, the 27th December 2023. Gwan Marc. The Liffey rises in the Liffey Head Bog...
