What makes it 72% Kids-Friendly: Carvings work for a scavenger hunt and a playground sits 100 m away; yet there is no hands-on exhibit, limited shade, and the only toilets lack child-friendly fixtures—check before visiting.
Why 1-2 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: Allows time to explore reliefs with a scavenger hunt, play at the Rotonda playground, and enjoy a picnic.
Relief Scavenger Hunt:
Spot and circle scenes on the arch’s relief panels.
Tip: Print or download a simple map to guide kids to eagles, soldiers, and chariots.
Rotonda Playground:
Wooden slides and swings next to the Rotunda dome.
Tip: Bring a change of clothes and water; the ground has safe flooring.
Picnic in Navarinou Square:
Lay out a blanket amid low stone walls of the palace ruins.
Tip: Pack snacks from a nearby bakery and use the traffic-free zone for safe play.

The Arch of Galerius, locally known as Kamara, is one of Thessaloniki’s most iconic Roman landmarks. Built between 298 and 303 AD to celebrate Emperor Galerius’ victory over the Persians, it was originally part of a monumental complex connecting the Rotunda to the imperial palace along the Via Egnatia. Today, only three of the original eight pillars remain, but the arch still impresses with intric...

Like much of Thessaloniki's history, it's hard to fully appreciate the Arch of Galerius as it has been absorbed into the urban sprawl. Its richly detailed reliefs, depicting the victories of Roman Emperor Galerius over the Persians, are now home to pigeons.

The Arch of Galerius is definitely a must visit if you came up until Rotonda as they are part of the same complex! It depicts the victory of Rome against the Sassanids and it was made for emperor Galerius just like the mausoleum! Great place for pictures and to take in one of the most important Roman monuments of Thessaloniki!

Not sure where the 5euro is coming into play since it's open to the public within 500feet of the Rotunda and there is nothing to "go in" or "climb up". Just a nice walk through arches that depict a battle scenes. The ones on the inner parts of the arches are more preserved. The outter scenes are almost gone, in one scene you can only make out the raised outline of a figure. I would make this a MUS...

This is one of Thessaloniki’s most famous Roman monuments and a key historic landmark in northern Greece. Located in the central part of the city, its walking distance from the port. The original arch had 8 pillars today there are 3. The detail carved into the marble commemorates Galerius’s victory over the Persians in 298 AD. Quite a site to see. Free to view.
In summer, visit early to avoid heat; in winter, dress warmly as the site is exposed. Spring and autumn offer mild weather and blooming trees near the playground.
