Kids over six can reach the chapel for volcano vistas, but sheer drops, loose rocks, heat, and zero railings or toilets make the summit section and long stay risky for most families.
Note: Skaros Rock is 40% Kids-Friendly. You may want to consider other Kids-Friendly Things to Do in Santorini for a more suitable experience.
Why 1-2 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: A 1–2 hour visit lets families hike to the chapel and enjoy views without tiring young children.
Panagia Theoskepasti Chapel Hike:
Climb 200 steps down to the chapel ruins overlooking the caldera.
Tip: Stop often to rest and drink water; let kids explore small ruins safely.
Cliffside Family Picnic:
Spread a blanket on flat rocks near the chapel for snacks.
Tip: Bring non-perishable food and a ground sheet; supervise kids on the cliff edge.
Donkey Ride Treat:
Kids can ride a donkey on the final steps toward Skaros Rock.
Tip: Confirm availability at the trailhead and set a clear meeting spot.
Sunset and Caldera Views:
Watch the sun dip behind volcanic cliffs from the rock base.
Tip: Arrive 30 minutes early; bring a flashlight for the return.
In summer, start before 10 AM to avoid heat and apply sunscreen. In spring, enjoy wildflowers along the trail. In winter, wear sturdy shoes as stones can be slippery after rain.

Lovely place to go for a short hike of roughly 60 minutes. The views from the rock are breathtaking and best to hike it in the morning (especially during hot summer months) when you get plenty of shaded area on the other side of the rock with lots of breeze thay feels quite refreshing. There is a lovely church on the back side and lots of amazing view points.

A great hike that is definitely not for those in need to assistance. We walked from Santorini Princess so it was all in all good cardio. From actually starting the Skaros Rock trail to the second church in the other side of the point and back it took about 1 hour and another 1/2 hour for taking pictures, but my partner and I were setting a fast pace. BRING/WEAR TENNIS SHOES IF YOU WANT TO MAKE IT ...

Totally worth the hike down. Apparently used to be an epic Medieval castle that’s now ruins. A little sketchy in spots - be careful by the edges of course - but otherwise not that difficult to walk around. Great view inside the caldera and of the volcano. Bring some water for the hike back up 😅
LAND ROVER
Very nice hike to do early in the morning, before the Sun gets too far overhead, we didn't quite make sunrise, but we were only about an hour behind walk through the city down a secret stairway and descend down to skaros rock... I will highly recommend wearing some good. Hiking shoes or very good. Equipped running shoes with extra grip as the terrain is loose gravel and some pretty Steep inclines ...

Great little hike not for those who need assistance. It is a hiking trail that is at the bottom of a very steep set of concrete steps. I would estimate about 100 steps to get to the bottom so you can then transfer to a gravel trail. I loved the hike and the exercise it was excellent and absolutely what I anticipated.. I will just say that it is NOT for the folks who would need assistance.
