What makes it 35% Kids-Friendly: Only fit, history-loving tweens may enjoy; most kids face a hot 2 km cobbled ascent, loose stones, cliffs without railings, no playground, and very basic toilets.
Note: Ancient Thera is 35% Kids-Friendly. You may want to consider other Kids-Friendly Things to Do in Santorini for a more suitable experience.
Why 2-3 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: Gives time for the uphill hike, breaks for water and snacks, and a relaxed tour of the ruins.
Hike the Kamari–Thera footpath:
Follow the 2.3 km cobbled trail from Kamari up to the ruins, passing ancient cemetery remains and coastal views.
Tip: Start before 10 AM, carry at least 1 L water per person, and use a child carrier backpack for younger kids.
Self-guided ruins exploration:
Walk through Hellenistic walls, the small theatre and the agora at your own pace.
Tip: Download the free site map from the Greek Culture Ministry before you go and point out theatre seats to kids.
Snack break at the platform:
Use the free tables just below the entrance for a picnic with sea views above Kamari beach.
Tip: Pack fruits, sandwiches and a mat; leave no litter behind.
Sketching and photography:
Let kids draw the amphitheatre or snap photos from key overlooks in the necropolis trenches.
Tip: Bring clipboards, pencils and a simple camera or phone for fun memories.

Do not come here if you are unfit, I barely made it around the entire site. This is a beautiful site to view, would 100% recommend if you are a history fan or would like to know how the ancient ones lived before us!

A wonder of ancient Grecian culture, however no toilet facilities available after an hour climb from Perissa was not ideal and the cantina at the pass was also not open for any refreshment

We walked up this very steep 3 KM road not realizing how steep or far it was to the top. Once there we were happy to see a snack bar with water for 1 E. It was 10E to enter. It was very interesting ancient site with so much to see. It took us about 2 hours to walk through all of it.

Superb to see ancient archaeology so well preserved. Nice to wander freely through the ruins. The signs provided useful historic details. The walk up is a little rugged so wear good footwear.

Open as of April the 3rd 2025 (10 eur/person). Worth the ride and hike up, wonderful views from the top, the site is walkable through a 'secured' path and there are numerous signs explaining the various building remains. The path for visitors could be maintained better, I would not be comfortable walking around in flip-flops.
In summer start early to avoid heat and sun exposure. Spring and autumn are cooler but can be windy. Wear layers in winter.
