Stroller paths exist only in the moat park, yet wall stairs, lack of nursing or changing facilities, and strong sun on the ramparts limit comfort for babies and carers.
Note: Venetian Walls of Heraklion is 49% Baby-Friendly. You may want to consider other Baby-Friendly Things to Do in Heraklion for a more suitable experience.
Why 2-3 hours visit duration is ideal for with baby: Allows time for a gentle park visit, short wall stroll, and a café break without rushing a baby
Stroller-friendly moat park:
Relax in the green park below the walls with playground, benches, and paved paths.
Tip: Bring snacks and water; paths are level and shaded in spots
Picnic under Kazantzakis Bastion:
Use picnic tables and benches in the shady grove near the bastion.
Tip: Pack baby’s favorite foods; the kiosk nearby sells juice boxes and biscuits
Oasis café stop:
Enjoy cold drinks and soft ice cream at the open-air café inside the walls.
Tip: Order two snacks to share; it’s a quick shaded break
In summer, visit early or late for cooler temps and shade in the moat park. Spring and autumn bring mild weather for stroller walks. Winters can be windy—dress baby in layers.

Though disgracefully unattended, the walls of Heracleion remain massively impressive, and an enduring landmark in world history as far as fortifications are concerned. These walls repelled a Turkish host for no less than 21 (!) years of continuous attacks and bombarding, setting the global record for such a feat. Even after this punishment, the walls did not falter. Nor did the courage of its defe...

Beautiful walls. But not much left now which is a real shame. They are huge. You can walk a small part of them.

This is truly disgraceful. The ruins of the Venetian fortress are undeniably impressive, which is no surprise given how significant the island of Crete, and especially the city of Heraklion (Candia), was to the Venetian Empire. With a bit of effort, the walls of the old citadel could easily become one of Greece’s most important tourist attractions. Sadly, the authorities seem uninterested in res...

A big part of the walls is under maintenance, but there are a lot of secrets hidden around. Don't miss the theatres and the summer movie nights.

We walked the walls from here clockwise around the old town until we hit the sea. Great walk with some amazing views of the surrounding area, almost no one else on the wall at about 9am while it is still relatively cool. It’s really awesome to see the outdoor theatres that have been established within some parts of the walls, I wish we had time to check them out.
