Positives:

  • Free parking near entrance: Park just steps from the trail start, making it easy to unload strollers or carriers.
  • Shaded rest spots: Wooden tables and benches under pines offer safe feeding and diaper-change areas.

Challenges:

  • Rough underfoot terrain: Loose gravel and stone slabs make strollers difficult beyond the first trail section.
  • No changing facilities: There is no dedicated baby-changing station; bring a portable mat and wipes.

A short 2 km walk around the pine forest nice and different than the seaside.

Small pine forest outside of Archanes only a few kilometers from Heraklion. It has several trails that are easy to hike with an Minoan archeological site and a amphitheatre. The view over the valley and down at Archanes is beautiful. The forest is surrounded by olive trees. From the parking, it's only a few minutes to Archanes which is one of the most beautiful villages and worth a visit.

We had an outside lunch in the shade of the olive trees where the temperature was much cooler (July). The place is quiet, there were no other tourist apart from us, and we took a nap there with a great view on the hills and sea further down.

Whatever the season this is a great place for a quiet walk in the nature. Not that far from Iraklion it gets a bit crowded on weekends but there is always somewhere you can sit and relax.

Beautiful forest area with a small theatre and lots of shade. Starting point for many nice roundways into the nearby gorge. As the are is at least partly shadowed it is also possible to take a walk here during the summer months. The View into the villages and olive "fields" is stunning. It is possible to get to the top by car and them start any of the walking tours.

When is the best time to visit Fourní Forest (Heraklion, Greece)?

In spring the forest blooms and paths are firm. In summer arrive before 10 AM to enjoy cooler shade and bring extra water. In winter wear waterproof shoes as some trails get muddy.
