The Caryatid porch and sweeping city views suit romantic photos and sunset watching, and shared audio guides enrich the date. Lack of seating and shade means couples should time the visit early or late.

Positives:

  • Rich Mythic Heritage: Temple design reflects Athena and Poseidon’s contest, adding depth to your visit.
  • Intimate Setting: Smaller crowds here than at the Parthenon allow a quieter shared experience.

Challenges:

  • Uneven Ground: Marble steps and terraces are worn; wear sturdy shoes and watch your step.
  • No Interior Access: You can only view the temple from the outside, limiting close-up inspection.

The Erechtheion, located on the north side of the Acropolis of Athens, is one of the most distinctive and elegant monuments of classical antiquity. Built between 421 and 406 BC, it was dedicated to both Athena and Poseidon, reflecting the mythological contest between the two deities for the city's patronage. Its unusual, asymmetrical design sets it apart from other temples, responding to the uneve...

Absolutely stunning! My favourite temple within the Acropolis of Athens. The statues of Athena are replicas. You can find the original statues within the Acropolis Museum. Love the olive tree outside of the temple, it adds so much to meaning of what it is.

I was most thrilled to see the Erechtheion, a temple dedicated to both Athena and Poseidon, out of the entire ground of Acropolis. The six maidens, Caryatids, standing in silent grace on the south side of the porch rain or shine, who took the place of columns in supporting the entablature, was definitely the reason I came. In 1978, severely weathered and affected by pollution, five caryatids were ...

A temple built in honor of King Erechtheion, who was born according to mythology in a rather strange way - from the fire seed of Hephaestus, who tried to rape Athena and she threw his seed and thus the king was born. On the Erechtheion terrace stand 6 caryatids, columns sculpted in the form of a woman. These columns are not the original statues but copies. The 5 original statues were transferred t...
