The one thing that you have to be there to fully grasp is how massive the whole complex is. 8700 rooms. No movie or book or painting can convey that scale. Go early in the morning, as the crowds are much more manageable. Beautiful architecture and sculptures.

Take your time getting through the Forbidden City. It is a massive place. Do some reading on it prior. Probably best to go on your own, tour groups will go right up the middle. Here are some extra places to explore in the North Eastern section.
