What makes it 85% Solo-Friendly: The free 24-hour plaza lets solo travelers linger, use a smartphone audio tour, journal on nearby benches, and join wreath events; lack of shelter or toilets requires planning breaks elsewhere.
Why 1–2 hours visit duration is ideal for solo trip: Enough time to view all statues, read inscriptions, and reflect without rushing.
Self-Guided Reflection & Journaling:
Use the plaza benches to journal or sketch the bronze figures.
Tip: Visit early for soft light and quiet space to read each inscription.
Audio Tour with Smartphone App:
Download the free War∙Military Museums Guide app for voice commentary on each sculpture.
Tip: Enable offline mode before arrival to save data and follow the suggested route around the arch.
Visit at Twilight:
Come just after sunset when spotlights cast dramatic shadows across the arch and statues.
Tip: Arrive 15 minutes before blue hour to set up your camera for best lighting.

The granite arch portrays bronze sculptures of World War One Canadian soldiers, sailors and airmen. It is also dedicated to those killed in the Second Boer War, World War Two, the Korean War, the War in Afghanistan and all conflicts in the past and those to come in the future. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier lies in front of the memorial.

The monument is dominating the landscape with its height. We were lucky to catch a change of guard (we didn’t know the schedule) and was a nice experience.

Visiting The National War Memorial was moving experience. I came here on Canada day to visit Parliament Hill, and stopping by the memorial was an experience i can never forget during my Montreal visit. The two soldiers who stood in front of the memorial (see images below for reference) heightened the powerful sight further.

This is quite the monument here in downtown Ottawa. I like coming here often on a nice sunny day and taking in the ambiance of this war memorial. Unlike others I don’t find Ottawa boring and it has lots to offer in terms of scenery and history. This is one such spot. 👍😎
In spring, tulips bloom around the plaza adding color. In winter, paths can ice over—wear warm layers and traction boots. On Nov 11 at 11 am, join the Remembrance Day ceremony for the national two-minute silence.
