What makes it 70% Baby-Friendly: Stroller-friendly paths and free picnic lawns suit infants, yet diaper tables only in paid museum and canal edges lack railings, so caregivers need gear and vigilance.
Why 2-3 hours visit duration is ideal for with baby: Allows time for a stroller walk, picnic, boat cruise, and a quick museum visit without rushing your baby.
Stroller-Friendly Canal Walk:
Follow the wide, smooth paved path along Locks 1–8.
Tip: Start near the visitor shelter to avoid portage ramps and bring a sunhat for your baby.
Picnic at the Lockstation:
Use picnic tables and grassy areas beside the canal.
Tip: Bring a portable changing mat and baby snacks; choose a shaded spot close to the washrooms.
Rideau Canal Electric Boat Cruise:
Board a stable 90-minute guided cruise; infants ride free.
Tip: Reserve online early, stow your stroller at the gangway, and carry a soft baby carrier for onboard comfort.
Bytown Museum Visit:
Explore Ottawa’s oldest stone building beside the locks; babies under 5 enter free.
Tip: Use the museum’s accessible washroom with a changing station for private diaper changes.
Self-Guiding Interpretive Trail:
Enjoy a flat, stroller-friendly trail with panels on canal history.
Tip: Begin at the Parks Canada shelter and carry a light rain cover if the path is wet.

Beautiful place for a walk with your family. There are boats that need to go through so you might be lucky to spot them.

Was able to see the locks in action with a bunch of boats going up the canal. Visited July 2015, July 2025

Quite relaxing place near Parliament building. The canal itself is listed in UNESCO and the surrounding is quite relaxing.

Because of it's proximity to the Parliament Building and other historical sites, we sat and watched the Locks as they were opened for boats wanting to go through. We learned a lot about the Locks on during our tour on the Lady Dive amphibious bus including that the Locks are still opened by man power (whoa). The process does take quite a while to happen, but it's quite fascinating to watch indeed....

The Rideau Canal in Ottawa is an amazing place, especially if you love beautiful scenery and peaceful, picturesque views. I visited on a fairly cool day with very few people around, which only added to the charm. The fresh air and calm atmosphere made the walk special. Boat cruises and museum are open May–October. In spring paths may be muddy—bring waterproof shoes. In winter the canal is icy and most services close. Always confirm hours before you go.
