How Kids-Friendly is Australian Museum?

Children under 12 can dig at the Dino pit, climb through Kidspace pods, follow activity trails and join holiday workshops, while parents use pram bays and cafés, giving strong educational play value.

Considerations for visiting Australian Museum (with kids)

Positives:

  • Free permanent galleries: Access core exhibits without entry fees keeps costs low.
  • Interactive learning: Hands-on zones hold children’s attention and spark curiosity.

Challenges:

  • Peak-hour crowds: Level 2 play areas fill quickly on weekends and holidays.
  • Limited seating: Seating is scarce in Hintze Hall; plan short breaks at the café.

Recommended visit duration: 2-3 hours

Why 2-3 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: A 2–3 hour visit covers key galleries and play areas without tiring kids.

The kids had such a wonderful time learning g new facts about dinosaurs in the museum followed by lots of photos and exploring in the garden. The crystal were beautiful and so many different designs to look and choose from. The little crystal pit for the kids to pick their own crystals was a fantastic way for the kids to pick the ones they loved.

Oh free entry for all to this museum 😉 Entry fee required only for special exhibits...

We’re from the Sunshine Coast and really enjoyed our visit to the Australian Museum. It’s super easy to get there from Chinatown, we caught the tram, then walked just a few minutes to the entrance. The location is really convenient if you’re already around the city. Inside, there’s a lot to explore! They have everything from cool Indigenous history displays to natural science exhibits. My favorit...

Really cool to see, and the fact that it’s free is wonderful. I’ve definitely paid for less in the past. Great collection of taxidermied Australian birds and other animals. Ran out of time to see everything which is a testament to how big it is. Nice souvenir shop as well.
