How Kids-Friendly is Walshs Pyramid?

38%Kids-Friendly
View Map

What makes it 38% Kids-Friendly: Rocky scrambling, full sun and no toilets make the trail risky for most children; very fit, closely supervised 10–12 year-olds might manage, so the site is only partly suitable for families.

Positives:

  • No Entry Fee: The trail and car park are free to use, so you only cover travel and food costs.
  • Unique Landscape: The distinct pyramid shape offers a fun ‘mountain climb’ feeling for kids.

Challenges:

  • Steep Terrain: Some sections are rocky and steep; children under 8 may need extra help.
  • No On-site Facilities: There are no toilets or water refill stations. Use Gordonvale public toilets and bring all supplies.

Challenging hike, early in the morning will avoid the heat and catch a sunrise from the summit. Good footwear, water and snacks are essential. Allow at least 3-5hrs to complete this hike. Parking at start of trailhead for around 10 cars

A challenging trail but absolutely worth the effort - the views all the way up and down the pyramid are breathtaking, not only up on the summit! Hubby, my 12 yo & 14 yo boys and I did this trail mid-January and were sure to pack 2 litres of water each (used water and soft drink bottles!), muesli bars and apples and set off at 6am. Although it was a clear and sunny morning, it wasn't hot as the su...

It's a very steep and tough climb but the views along the way and at the top are worth it. Tried in January and the heat, humidity and rain made it very hard and slippery. Got to the peak during the dry season and it was much better without the heat and humidity. You can see all of Cairns and the surrounding mountain ranges. Bring enough water for your needs and start early.

More of a fitness challenge than a scenic walk, as it requires constant concentration. A technically difficult track, especially coming back down. The effort is rewarded with amazing 360 degree views from the top. Depending on your fitness, up and back will take 2-7 hours and you'll need 2-4 litres of water. Recommend starting at dawn as you'll get baked climbing this during the heat of the day. I...

Difficult walk as most of the track is rocky and is at a constant incline. Good fitness is recommended. If you are new to bushwalking, allow for an entire day (7 hours) to do this. People who can do grade 5 tracks can do this in around 4.5 hours. Views are amazing and worth the effort. Highly recommended.
