What makes it 91% Kids-Friendly: Hands-on Sciencentre games, crawl-through shipwreck sets and school-holiday reef talks keep 5–12-year-olds busy for hours, free entry saves money, though galleries can be crowded in peak breaks.
Why 2-3 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: This gives time for hands-on galleries, a shipwreck adventure, a café break and a quick shop without rushing kids.
Sciencentre:
Interact with gravity runs, magnetic puzzles and the disappearing mirror.
Tip: Go first to avoid queues and let kids expend energy on the floor’s open space.
Your Shipwreck Adventure:
Crawl through a replica funnel and use a diver’s slate to hunt artefacts.
Tip: Give younger kids the slate to fill in drawings before stepping into other galleries.
Pandora Gallery:
See HMS Pandora artefacts and hear its story through kid-friendly panels.
Tip: Look for the original shackles and compass parts; ask staff for a quick guide.
Reef Talks for Kids:
Catch free pop-up talks on coral babies, reef robots and microplastics.
Tip: Check the school-holiday schedule at the front desk on arrival; no booking needed.
The Galley Café:
Enjoy kid-friendly meals and drinks with a view over Ross Creek.
Tip: Reserve a table at 11 am or after 1 pm to avoid the lunch rush.

Detailed exhibit on the HMS Pandora and the HMS Bounty with stories of the back and forth journey around the world to Tahiti and the Great Barrier Reef. The rainforest exhibit was also a lot of fun. Also, a nice area for children to experiment in the science center with building and puzzles.

A really impressive museum that is focussed to families and kids. Enough there to keep the adults engaged for an hour or so. Great for ship wreck enthusiasts and for those heading into nature while in TNQ. Good brief plant/animal/insect identifiers.

Lovely modern and open museum that is FREE and has very friendly employees. Great replica of HMS Pandora and related artifacts, as well as some fun (more child oriented and interactive) exhibits about local wildlife and living in this region. Probably a 45 minute visit for adults but more time needed with kids. Great local museum for the city.

This Museum is a must go if visiting Townsville. There were so much exhibitions that we could not finish exploring even after spending half a day here. Lots of interactive displays perfect for young Children and families. General entry is free of charge , however fees will apply for temporary exhibitions.
School-holiday pop-up talks run in spring and summer. The museum stays dry during brief afternoon storms in the wet season (Dec–Mar).
