What makes it 79% Kids-Friendly: Children have family fares, tunnel stories, waterfall spotting and a push-cart display, yet there is no playground and the 1.5-hour ride may strain young attention spans.
Why 2-3 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: A 2–3 hour visit lets a family explore the museum, board the train, and enjoy the café without rushing younger kids.
Board Heritage Class Family Fare:
Book family tickets on the Heritage Class train departing Freshwater Station.
Tip: Pre-book online; children under 4 often travel free—check age policy before you go.
Explore the Heritage Railway Museum:
View vintage lanterns, tickets, push-cart and storyboards on platform.
Tip: Grab free paper trip guides for kids and use tactile-edge displays to make it interactive.
Spot Waterfalls from the Train:
See Stoney Creek Falls through the window and Din Din (Barron Falls) at the station stop.
Tip: Head to the open viewing caboose for best sightlines and bring small binoculars for kids.
Relax at The Station @ Freshwater Café:
Sample drinks and light meals inside a decommissioned carriage or at open-air tables.
Tip: Arrive before 10 am for quieter seating and ask staff for high-chairs if needed.
Browse Train-Themed Souvenirs:
Shop postcards, toy trains and magnets at the ticket counter kiosk.
Tip: Let each child pick a small keepsake under AUD 15 to stay on budget.

Great experience getting to enjoy an old style train and with historical information given over the overhead speakers. Half of the trip closest to Kuranda was very cool with bridges, tunnels and waterfalls, the other half closer to town was less interesting.

We did the train up to Karanda and down to Smithfield on the cable cars. Train stopped along the way to take some photos. Great experience. Ideal to have a window seat and face the way you’re travelling. Just a shame that so many shops have closed and vacant at Karanda. Takes a bit of the buzz away from the place.

Says "Scenic" but for 95% of the journey you only see trees on one side and a rock face on the other, no views at all. The track feels so poorly maintained that any Swiss rail engineers would jump off and walk on safety grounds. The train and carriages themselves are lovely. Such a shame as the experience could be so much better with fresh blast and tampering to smooth the ride out.

Beautiful gardens and a marble bathroom. Lots of parking and it meant we did not have to travel all the way in to Cairns. Designated seats on the train means that you dont have to be worried about not g...

It's so cute and full of character — a much more atmospheric and peaceful way to begin the journey compared to Cairns' busier station. The staff were welcoming, the grounds beautifully maintained, and the vibe was calm and m...
