What makes it 75% Kids-Friendly: Kids can count bell strikes, picnic on open lawns, join the tower tour if over five, and visit the nearby Boundless playground, but the island lacks dedicated play gear or toilets, slightly lowering suitability.
Why 1-2 hours visit duration is ideal for with kids: Short walk, picnics, and chimes fit this span without tiring younger kids.
Bell Chimes & Recitals:
Hear automated chimes every 15 minutes and live recitals on Sundays and Wednesdays.
Tip: Arrive 5 minutes early to secure a spot on the lawn; kids can count each bell strike.
Guided Tower Tour:
Join a 45-minute tour to touch bronze bells, try the clavier, and see Canberra from 36 m up.
Tip: Book online in advance; only children 5+ can join, so one adult should stay with younger children.
Island Picnic & Play:
Bring snacks to eat on the grass; children can run and play in the open area.
Tip: Pack a small picnic mat and choose a shaded spot near the tower base.
Boundless Playground Visit:
Walk 5 minutes to the ramp-accessible Boundless Playground in Kings Park.
Tip: Use the playground toilets for nappy changes; bring spare clothes for water play.
Lakeside Stroll:
Follow the paved path around Aspen Island for views of Parliament House.
Tip: The flat, stroller-friendly path is best after a chime session to keep kids engaged.

Lovely place to come for a picnic. Stroll around, relax and listen to the bells play. Night time it is all lit up and is very impressive. Sit down on a seat and watch the ducks, swans, or people paddling. Or even the rest of the world walk and run by. I personally just get lost in my thoughts while looking out over the lake enjoying a coffee.

Great tour. Such a shame the carillonist Thomas is losing his job due to ANU closing the school of music. Why is my question?

A fantastic feature of Canberra. There are recitals lasting an hour twice a week, where they play classical music and movie soundtracks on the 70 odd bells. Check their website for times and dates in case it changes. There are inexpensive hour long tours after each recital, where you can meet the carilionists, see the keyboard where they play, and the bells in the belfry. There are great views of ...

A nice little island to enjoy an afternoon picnic or walk/jog around it. A good spot to view the sunset, because the sun sets across the lake, overlooking the Parkes area (National Library, Parliament House, National Gallery, etc.). The bell chimes every hour (I think), but it chimed every 15 mins towards sunset time (I’m not exactly sure but that’s what happened).
Use sunscreen and hats in summer; pack light jackets in winter for lake breezes. Check nca.gov.au for family events like the October Chime In.
