What makes it 79% Couple-Friendly: Two adults get tranquil wildlife watching, sunrise photography and private picnic lawns on step-free trails, yet lack of toilets, café or shady shelters reduces comfort on long, hot visits.
Why 2–3 hours visit duration is ideal for couple trip: Allows time for two walking loops, bird hide visits and a relaxed picnic by the wetlands.
Walk Kelly’s Swamp Loop:
A flat 1 km loop through waterbird habitat and kangaroo grazing areas.
Tip: Start at sunrise to see active wildlife and avoid midday heat.
Visit bird hides:
Tadorna and Fulica hides offer close-up views of pelicans, snipe and ducks.
Tip: Bring binoculars and stay quiet for best sightings at dawn or dusk.
Picnic by Molonglo Reach:
Scenic grassy banks beside the water for a private meal.
Tip: Park at Dairy Road, bring a blanket, snacks and refillable water bottles.
Use the free audio tour:
Guided stories on history and ecology along three routes.
Tip: Download the app in advance and carry earphones for clear audio.
Nature photography:
Capture migratory ducks, turtles and the rare Latham’s Snipe.
Tip: Use a telephoto lens and move slowly to avoid startling wildlife.

Lovely walk around the wetlands. Plenty of birds and kangaroos!

Wonderful to find hides to photograph wildlife so close to the car park and yet not so close that it disturbs the animals. Fantastic bird photography opportunities if you’ve got a long enough lens, and great great atmospheric environmental/contextual shots working at a shorter range. Love mist in offer during the spring.

Big nature reserve near the airport, with bridges, metal pathways, and bike trails around a lot of the reserve. Not my favorite nature reserve in Canberra, but not my least favorite either. The weather wasn’t very good. On a nice day, it could be beautiful and sunny, I think.

A beautiful spot for a walk with plenty of places to sit and listen to the amazing wildlife. We downloaded the app and listened to interesting information about the wetlands and the wildlife. The paths are stable to walk on, with some even being suitable for bikes and wheelchairs. We enjoyed the different viewing cabins with posters of the birds and animals. Toilets not readily available on weeke...
Spring brings migratory birds like Latham’s Snipe; in summer visit early to beat the heat; winter mornings offer crisp light and fewer crowds.
